In 1648, when NYC was called "New Amsterdam" the first firemen were four guys named Martin Krieger, Thomas Hall, George Woolsey, and Adrien Wyser.
Their job was to patrol the neighborhoods and give fines to people who didn't keep their chimney properly swept. They used the money to buy hooks, ladders, and buckets. The early firemen were called the "Prowlers or Rattle Watch".
The firemen in early America were the Ku Klux Klan. Heres the irony, instead of monitoring over fires, they were causing them by burning down churches and homes. It goes deeper!
